Name: Ian Fahy
Job Title: Police Sergeant
Hours: Full Time
Department/ Division: Uniform Local Policing Team, D Division, Hull
Date Joined Humberside Police: 1998
Career History with the Police:
Completed probation at Hull central and worked on response car until Local Policing Teams were created. Worked as community officer at Newland Local Policing Team before taking a 3-month career break in order to stay at home and look after my newborn daughter so that my wife could return to work. I then became Local Intelligence Officer at Newland before passing promotion exams. Promoted to Sergeant in November 2004 at Beverley Road Local Policing Team.
Career History prior to the Police:
After leaving school I worked in a men’s wear shop before moving to a specialist-printing factory where I stayed for 8 years' the last 2 as a supervisor.
What elements of the job do you enjoy the most?:
I enjoy the variety in the Police, getting involved in serious incidents from a live perspective, never knowing what I may be dealing with from one moment to the next. Recently I have been involved in scene management, supervising staff and getting to see the bigger picture surrounding policing issues.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about applying for a job with the force?
There is still no other job that can offer such a wide variety of opportunities and experiences. There are always frustrations, but the successes out weigh them, knowing that you have contributed to a conviction and have helped the victims of crime to find justice.
Please give details of any work based project, achievement or challenge that you are particularly proud of.
I am proud of the fact that I am still relatively young in the service and have managed to reach the rank of sergeant. I intend to take a break from studying for now, but will be taking my inspectors exams in the not too distant future. At the moment I feel like the only limit on the promotion ladder is the amount of effort I am prepared to put in.
